For Buchanan Elementary third graders, the social studies lessons didn’t end in the classroom—they came to life in Lansing.
Thanks to a $500 Teacher Innovation Fund grant, third grade teacher Sarah Garcia helped make an unforgettable field trip possible for approximately 70 students. The grant covered transportation and trip expenses, allowing students to explore the Michigan State Capitol, the Michigan Supreme Court, and the Michigan History Museum.
From the moment students climbed aboard a coach bus—many for the very first time—the excitement was contagious. After enjoying breakfast on the ride, the class arrived in Lansing for a full day of hands-on learning.
Students toured the Capitol, learned about Michigan’s judicial system during a visit to the Supreme Court, and explored the Michigan History Museum, where they connected classroom lessons to real artifacts and exhibits. Teachers also created a scavenger hunt that reinforced key concepts throughout the trip.
“The trip was very successful,” Garcia shared. “Students were able to connect so much of what they learned to what they were able to experience first-hand. The timing was perfect, and the scavenger hunt helped keep students focused throughout the museum. We wouldn’t change a single thing.”
Students left inspired, saying: “This was the best day ever!”, “I want to come here again!”, and “We saw all the things we learned about!”
By investing in innovative classroom experiences, the Teacher Innovation Fund helps GRPS educators create meaningful opportunities that inspire curiosity, deepen learning, and show students that history is something they can experience firsthand.
