Union High School Brings Back Musical Theater After a Decade

For the first time in over ten years, Union High School proudly revived its musical theater program with a vibrant production of Mean Girls Jr. Funded by the Teacher Innovation Fund, the show was performed in March at Union’s auditorium, highlighting the impressive talents of Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) students.

The return of theater had a powerful impact on the cast, many shared how the experience helped build their self-confidence and created a sense of community. “Theater forces you to get out of your shell,” said Makayla Beane-Windon who played Cady Heron.

Marisa Plouhar, Union’s choir teacher and a driving force behind the production, emphasized the value of arts education: “Theater education is incredible for kids. They learn so many different skills they can’t learn anywhere else.”

GRPS student Finnick Coburn, who played Damian Hubbard, couldn’t contain his excitement when the production was announced. “I freaked out—I’ve always loved theater!” he said.

This production marks a hopeful new chapter for Union High, where the stage lights are once again shining on young talent and creative expression.
