Building Bright Futures Through Play: Mr. Caballero’s Classroom Brings STEM Learning to Life

In Porfidio Caballero’s first-grade classroom at César E. Chávez Elementary, learning doesn’t just happen at desks—it happens on the floor, in small groups, through hands-on exploration, laughter, and imagination. Thanks to the Teresa Weatherall Neal Principal’s Fund, his scholars now have a collection of magnetic building blocks and STEM toys that will spark creativity and curiosity for years to come.

For Mr. Caballero, this project is about far more than new materials. It’s about giving his 100 scholars opportunities they often don’t get anywhere else—the chance to learn through play.

“I love seeing the students engaged in learning through play,” he shared. And now, with these new STEM resources, that engagement is happening every single day.

Why Play Matters
Play is one of the most effective ways for children to learn. With new STEM materials in the classroom, scholars naturally practice problem-solving, creativity, communication, teamwork, and confidence—all while having fun. These tools help students build lifelong skills in a joyful, low-pressure way and give every child a chance to explore, imagine, and grow.

Impact on Scholars
This investment will benefit many students, with materials durable enough to support learning for years to come. Scholars now have daily opportunities to collaborate, experiment, and discover new strengths—experiences that not only enrich their academic growth but also support their social and emotional development.
