Enhancing Communication at Dickinson Academy: A Playground Success Story

Thanks to the Teacher Innovation Fund, students at Dickinson Academy are thrilled to have new no-tech communication boards available during recess. Recently, three of these boards were installed near the preschool and K-5 playgrounds, much to the excitement of students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) within the school environment.

A New Playground Feature

The addition of these communication boards has been a hit among both special education and general education students. Children eagerly approached the boards, pointing to words and phrases related to recess activities. Some students unknowingly modeled language for their peers, while others, who typically use single words to express their needs and ideas, began forming phrases like “I go play” and “I want swings” with the support of the Speech-Language Pathologist. One enthusiastic student was even heard saying, “Let’s go, G-O, go!”

Supporting All Students

These communication boards are proving to be a valuable resource for all students, especially English Language Learners and those with communication difficulties. The pictures on the boards support comprehension when used by a communication partner, and the images paired with written words promote word recognition. For nonverbal students or those with limited verbal output, the boards provide an alternative way to interact with their peers, which has already been evident on the playground.

Positive Outcomes and Future Improvements

The success of the communication boards is already apparent. Staff members have been given access to a website link, provided via a QR code on the bottom of the boards, to learn strategies for using the boards with students. This initiative underscores the belief that every scholar has a right to communicate, and these boards offer an effective means to do so.

Looking ahead, there is potential for even greater success if a board could be installed closer to the playground equipment. This would allow students to use the communication supports more efficiently, further enhancing their ability to interact and play with their peers.

The introduction of no-tech communication boards at Dickinson Academy is a testament to the power of innovative solutions in supporting student communication and inclusion. The excitement and engagement observed on the playground are clear indicators of the positive impact these boards are having on the school community.
