A Teacher Innovation Fund Project at Ridgemoor Park Montessori
At Ridgemoor Park Montessori, our young explorers embarked on an owl odyssey that seamlessly blended Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). Thanks to the Teacher Innovation Fund mini-grant, these curious minds took flight into the world of owls, leaving no discipline untouched.
Science (S): Owl Pellet Dissection
Under the guidance of their teacher, Rita Paniccia, 25 students rolled up their sleeves and dissected owl pellets. These compact bundles, regurgitated by owls, contained remnants of their prey – bones, fur, and other indigestible bits. By carefully examining these pellets, the students gained insights into owl behavior, diet, and the intricate web of life in their ecosystem.
Technology (T): From Classroom to Virtual Field Trip
The owl adventure didn’t stop at the classroom door. Students explored Blanford Nature Center, encountering rescued owls up close and learned about different species sounds, life cycle, diet and habitat. They witnessed their majestic presence, learned about conservation efforts, and connected classroom learning to real-world encounters and environmental stewardship.
Engineering (E): Owl Binoculars Craft
Creativity soared as students engineered their own owl binoculars. Crafted from art materials, these binoculars allowed them to observe nature like true scientists. The engineering process involved design, construction, and problem-solving – all while fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.
Art (A): Expressive Research Papers
In the spirit of artistry, students transformed their research findings into expressive papers. There papers capturing the nuances of owl habitats, behaviors, and dietary preferences. Art met science as they crafted eloquent narratives, infusing their papers with creativity and passion.
Math (M): Calculating Owl Pellet Contents
Mathematics played a vital role as students calculated owl pellet contents. They analyzed data, measured bone fragments, and quantified owl diets. The numbers revealed patterns and mysteries, reinforcing the interconnectedness of STEAM disciplines.
A Hoot of a Success!
The Ridgemoor Park Montessori owl project exemplified the power of STEAM education. Beyond textbooks and lectures, these young minds engaged with the natural world, leaving a positive environmental footprint. As the sun rose over Blanford N.C., the students reveled in their success, knowing that they had glimpsed the secret lives of owls and become stewards of our planet.
