Unlocking Creativity Through Glass Art
A Dynamic Learning Experience
In Jennifer Sharp’s art class, 75 high school students embarked on an exciting journey—expanding their use of the kiln to create stunning glass fusion pieces. Glass, with its vibrant colors and transformative properties, became a powerful medium for teaching essential artistic concepts.
Beyond the Ordinary
Traditionally, glass art can be cost-prohibitive, limiting students’ exposure to this captivating medium. However, with additional funding, we made it possible for our students to explore glass fusion—a process that combines color theory, form, and function.
The Magic of Fusion Molds
Thanks to a $500 mini-grant from the Teacher Innovation Fund, Ms. Sharp acquired fusion molds. But the real success story lies in the glass dishes the students crafted. Many of these beautiful creations found their way home immediately, leaving the students thrilled with their newfound artistic abilities.
Student Voices
One OHHS student shared, “My glass fusion project was really good. I chose the brightest colors of glass pieces and it changed, got flatter and made into one layer in the kiln heat. It made me feel like an artist. I gave it to my mom for Mother’s Day.”
The Creative Process
Students learned to manipulate multiple layers of glass, envisioning how their dishes would appear after firing. The concepting phase challenged them to use their mind’s eye and plan meticulously. Despite the initial flat arrangement, the finished products revealed the magic of glass fusion.
Conclusion: Expanding Horizons
This glass fusion project not only enriched our curriculum but also broadened students’ understanding of diverse art careers. By providing access to this dynamic process, we empower young artists to explore possibilities beyond the ordinary. Allow our scholars the opportunity to travel outside the realm of possibilities by supporting their art ambitions here. 🌟🎨
