In March, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order closing schools for a three-week period in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. That order was then extended through the end of the school year.

A survey revealed that 30% of student households did not have a reliable computer and/or internet access, making distance learning challenging for students. Developing a Continuity of Learning Plan which involved computer distribution, iPads and hotspots, GRPS and the GRPS Foundation called on the community for support.

Our great philanthropic community responded! In total, Grand Rapids Public Schools and the GRPS Foundation were able to raise more than $530,000 to support distance learning and address inequitable access to devices and internet. This quick response, by generous supporters, ensured students could continue their education throughout the shutdown.
